The Russian Ministry of Natural Resources announced plans to launch industrial production of molybdenum at five new deposits until 2028. This will ensure growing demand within the country and strengthen its position in the global market.

In the next three years, molybdenum development will begin at five sites:

  • Agaskyrskoye (Khakassia)
  • Ak-Sugskoe (Tuva)
  • Yuzhno-Shameyskoye (Sverdlovsk region)
  • Tyrnyauzskoye (Kabardino-Balkaria)
  • Gerbil (Chukotka)

Particular attention will be paid to the Peschanka and Ak-Sug fields, which will not only cover the needs of Russian industry, but will also become important points for export.

Now molybdenum in Russia is mined only in two deposits — Sorskoye in Khakassia and Mikheevskoye in the Chelyabinsk region. However, their capacity can no longer cope with growing demand.

Russia ranks sixth in the world in reserves molybdenum – about 2.19 million tons, or 6% of world resources. The Bugdainskoye field, with reserves of 600 thousand tons, provides more than a quarter of the domestic resource base.

Molybdenum is a strategically important metal that is used in key industries:

  • Metallurgy and construction – increases the strength and heat resistance of steel.
  • Aerospace – Used in high-temperature alloys for engines.
  • Energy – required for nuclear reactors and oil and gas equipment.
  • Electronics – used in the production of microcircuits and semiconductors.

The volume of financing for geological exploration in Russia is growing rapidly: if in 2024 2.1 billion rubles were allocated for these purposes, then in 2025 it is planned to invest 4.5 billion. Additionally, the state supported the projects, adding 105.5 million rubles in 2024.

Expanding molybdenum production will strengthen Russia’s position in the global market and provide raw materials to high-tech industries. New deposits will create the basis for sustainable development of industry and exports.
