From July 24 to August 4, the Perm region hosts the anniversary All-Russian Field Olympiad for Young People geologists. This year, almost 300 schoolchildren from 29 regions of Russia, as well as guests from Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, are competing for the title of best.
On July 25, the opening ceremony took place, at which the Governor of the Perm Territory Dmitry Makhonin and the head of Rosnedra Oleg Kazanov delivered welcoming remarks. The latter shared his personal experience: “Once upon a time, I was also a young geologist. Your choice to study geology is not an accident. Today you are the best in the country, and tomorrow you will become part of great science. I wish you bright victories and new discoveries!”
Dmitry Makhonin noted that the Perm region is an ideal place to host the Olympics. The region is famous for its rich mineral resources: the first Russian diamond was discovered here, the largest salt deposits were found, and one of the geological periods was even named after it.
Participants will have to demonstrate skills in 11 disciplines, including:
- Construction geological route and cut,
- Study of paleontological finds,
- Analysis of minerals and rocks,
- Work with oil and gas fields,
- Fundamentals of radiometry and safety engineering.
In addition to competitions, schoolchildren will enjoy scientific conferences, excursions to unique natural sites and creative competitions.
The Olympiad not only tests knowledge, but also opens doors to the profession. Many of its participants will become in demand in the future specialists in geology, oil and gas industry and ecology. The event is supported by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, Rosnedra and the government of the Perm Territory, which emphasizes its importance.
The XV Olympiad of Young Geologists is a start for new scientific achievements and a chance for children to prove themselves. Follow the results of the competition and discover the world of geology together with the participants!
