Russian oil and gas companies are considering the possibility of participating in the development deposits BirAllah offshore Mauritania. The project, previously owned by the British BP, may come under Russian control as early as 2025.

According to the Russian Embassy in Mauritania, the country’s authorities are interested in attracting foreign investors, including Russian companies. In addition to gas, Mauritania offers cooperation in production iron, gold, copper and uranium. The final decision on the participation of foreign partners will be made before the end of 2025, and gas production could begin in 2028.

The field is located 40 km from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project at a depth of 2.5 thousand meters. Its reserves are estimated at 2.27 trillion cubic meters of high quality gas. The project is recognized as commercially viable, and peak production is expected by 2030. Investments development will amount to about $17 billion, and the service life could last until 2062.

BirAllah was initially operated by the British BP, but the company requested a delay for additional research. Mauritania did not agree to the new terms and the contract was terminated. Despite this, bp continues to operate the GTA field and is involved in a green hydrogen project.

BirAllah could be a key project for the Mauritanian economy, which has previously faced a lack of investment due to political risks. Successful development of the field will strengthen the country’s position in the global gas market.

Russian companies have every chance to join this promising project, which will open up new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
