Ukraine Switches to E10 Gasoline with Bioethanol: What Will Change for Drivers?

As of July 1, all filling stations in Ukraine have begun selling gasoline that meets the new E10 fuel standard, containing up to 10% bioethanol. The move aligns Ukraine’s fuel market with European Union regulations while adding only a marginal increase to fuel prices for consumers.

Serhii Kuiun, Director of the A-95 Consulting Group, explained the economics behind the transition. According to him, blending bioethanol into gasoline increases wholesale fuel costs by approximately $15–25 per tonne. On a retail basis, this translates into an increase of roughly 0.50–0.70 Ukrainian hryvnias per liter, or less than 1% of the pump price. In his view, most motorists are unlikely to notice the difference.

When it comes to vehicle compatibility, experts agree that E10 gasoline is suitable for the overwhelming majority of modern vehicles. The change affects the fuel composition rather than its operating characteristics. However, the Ukrainian publication Obozrevatel advises owners of vehicles manufactured in the 1990s or earlier to exercise caution. Bioethanol can accelerate the aging of rubber hoses, gaskets, and fuel system seals. Older vehicles may therefore benefit from fuels with lower ethanol content, and some models may require minor adjustments to their fuel systems.

For fuel suppliers, adopting a single standard simplifies logistics. Distributors can now import the same gasoline blends for both EU countries and Ukraine, eliminating the need to produce separate fuel grades. This reduces supply chain costs and improves delivery efficiency.

The transition also supports Ukraine’s export ambitions. Earlier, Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotskyi stated that the government views bioethanol production as a promising export industry. Since bioethanol is produced from agricultural crops, growing demand could create new market opportunities for the country’s farming sector.

The E10 standard has been widely adopted across Europe for years. Using gasoline blended with bioethanol reduces dependence on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. One technical consideration is that bioethanol absorbs moisture more readily than conventional gasoline, making proper fuel storage and handling increasingly important.

Ukraine has now completed its transition to the common European gasoline standard. For drivers, the impact on fuel prices and vehicle operation is expected to be minimal, while for the broader economy the move strengthens integration with the EU fuel market and creates new opportunities for bioethanol exports.
