Scientists from Hong Kong have created artificial intelligence to predict extreme rainfall and thunderstorms. The new system warns in advance of weather changes, which will allow you to better prepare for the elements.
Experts from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology presented a new weather forecasting system based on artificial intelligence. The development is capable of predicting heavy rains and thunderstorms four hours in advance, while modern methods only warn 20-120 minutes in advance.
The model, created in collaboration with China’s meteorological services, uses data from the Fengyun-4 satellite. Satellite imagery helps detect the formation of thunderclouds earlier than radar systems can. Artificial intelligence analyzes the evolution of cloud systems and updates the forecast every 15 minutes.
According to the developers, the accuracy of forecasts using the new model has increased by more than 15%. This is especially important for Hong Kong and southern regions of China, where in 2025 the number of typhoons and heavy rainfalls significantly exceeded the seasonal norm. Last year alone, the city declared the highest level of rain alert five times.
Implementation AI models into the work of meteorological services will allow authorities and emergency services to more effectively respond to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. The technology will help minimize damage and increase public safety.
