Scientists at Perm Polytechnic University have developed a program based on artificial intelligence that automatically determines the technical condition of industrial structures. This solution will help reduce the risk of accidents and improve industrial safety.
There is an acute shortage of qualified personnel in the Russian construction sector – up to 25%. Young specialists often do not have sufficient experience to accurately assess the condition of structures, which leads to mistakes and increases the risk of accidents. Scientists at Perm Polytechnic University proposed a solution to this problem by developing a program based on artificial intelligence.
The program analyzes the technical condition of buildings of reloading units, which are widely used in metallurgical, chemical, mining and other industries. These structures play a key role in the transportation of bulk materials such as coal, ore or charge. One enterprise can have up to 40 such units, and their destruction can lead to production stoppages and accidents.
Traditional methods for assessing the condition of structures depend on expert opinion, which is often subjective. It is difficult for young professionals to accurately determine whether a structure needs repair or complete replacement. The new program uses a neural network model trained on data from technical reports for the period from 1997 to 2024. It takes into account parameters such as the level of corrosion, the condition of the protective coating, the integrity of components and other factors.
“The neural network determines the category of the structure’s condition and the need for repairs with an accuracy of 95%. This greatly simplifies the work of specialists and reduces the likelihood of errors,” explains Vitaly Platunov, a graduate student at the Department of Building Structures and Computational Mechanics at PNRPU.
In the future, the developers plan to create a Telegram bot to make the program easier for young professionals to use. This will simplify the assessment process and make it more accessible.
The development of Perm Polytechnic scientists opens up new opportunities for automating expert assessments in construction. This will not only improve the quality of inspections, but also ensure the safe operation of industrial structures, reducing the risks of accidents and disasters.
