The scientific forum preceding the V Congress of Young People began its work in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky scientists. The main topic is the development of seismology and volcanology. Experts present new technologies for tsunami forecasting, improving the accuracy of seismic monitoring and reducing avalanche danger.
The Kamchatka region is a unique natural laboratory. Here scientists can test hypotheses about the structure of the Earth and test innovative developments. These studies directly affect the safety and quality of life of people in earthquake-prone regions.
The work of the forum is divided into project and educational tracks. As part of the first, participants solve three key tasks:
- Study of avalanche danger in the Paratunka River valley and on the slopes of Vilyuchinsky and Mutnovsky volcanoes.
- Development of new high-precision methods tsunami forecasting in the Khalaktyrsky beach area.
- Improving approaches to construction in seismic zones, including seismic reinforcement of structures and emergency response.
The educational program includes a scientific school on geothermal energy, organized jointly with MIPT. Master classes, lectures and discussions on popularizing science are held for young researchers, undergraduate and graduate students.
Governor of the Kamchatka Territory Vladimir Solodov noted that such research lays the foundation for a safe future for the region. He expressed confidence that this is where breakthrough solutions will appear, allowing not only to withstand the elements, but also to use natural opportunities.
The practical value of such meetings has already been confirmed. The developments of the past year help mitigate the consequences of the Koryak volcano eruption and control avalanche danger using mathematical models.
In parallel with the forum, the Science 0+ festival is taking place in Kamchatka. Residents of the region can attend “Breakfasts with Scientists” in schools, science slams, and lectures by famous professors such as Nobel Prize nominee Artem Oganov.
The main event – the V Congress of Young Scientists – is scheduled for November 2025 in Sochi “Sirius”. The event in Kamchatka is part of the large-scale program of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia.
The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.
