As part of World Atomic Week, an agreement was signed in Moscow on the creation of a large mining and processing plant (GOK) on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The project participants were Rosatom Nedra and the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation.
The production will be built on the basis of Pavlovsky deposits, which is one of the five largest in Russia in terms of lead and zinc reserves. The new mining and processing plant will become a large-scale investment project for the entire Arctic region. Its planned capacity will be 3.5 million tons of ore per year.
The plant’s infrastructure will include a modern processing plant and a marine terminal for shipment of finished products. The project involves the construction of a rotational camp for employees. The key products of the enterprise will be high-quality lead and zinc concentrates with added value.
To implement the plans, the Pavlovskoye project will apply for resident status in the Capital of the North priority development territory. This step will provide the company with tax preferences and help attract new investors.
According to the General Director of Rosatom Nedra, Vladimir Verkhovtsev, the project has every chance of setting a new standard in the development of Arctic territories. The main task is to create a cost-effective production in the harsh conditions of the Far North, which will contribute to the development of the country’s mineral resource base.
The implementation of the project will strengthen Russia’s position in the global non-white market metals and will contribute to the socio-economic development of the Arctic regions.
The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.
