Specialists from St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad have created a drone that independently conducts seismic research in the harshest conditions. The device has already successfully passed the first tests.
A new seismic sensor drone can radically simplify geological exploration work in remote regions. The drone does not just deliver equipment, but completely completes the task: it independently buries the sensor into the ground, takes measurements and returns to the operator.
The key advantage of the technology is the elimination of complex wired systems. Deploying them in the Arctic and other hard-to-reach areas typically requires hundreds of specialists, and the work is complicated by extreme climates and a lack of infrastructure. A compact drone solves this problem by ensuring tight contact between the sensor and the surface and high quality data.
The development is part of a project to create wireless nodal seismic systems. In such systems, sensor interaction and information transfer are provided by a group of drones. This allows you to quickly control the quality of data and flexibly respond to changes in the situation in the work area.
Scientists have already created prototypes of specialized sensors and UAVs, and also developed new methods for processing seismic information. In the future, this will make it possible to solve problems of two-dimensional and three-dimensional seismic exploration on complex terrain. To find optimal sensor installation points, algorithms are used based on neural networks.
The technology of using seismic sensor drones opens the way to the creation of fully autonomous mobile complexes for seismic monitoring. Such complexes have no analogues in the world and can make geological exploration in the Arctic safer, faster and more economically efficient. The work is being carried out with the support of the Russian Science Foundation, which confirms the high potential and significance of the project for the country.
The material was prepared with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.
