A unique educational initiative has started in the capital of Mongolia – the first joint Russian-Mongolian Youth Olympiad geologists. The event is attended by 80 schoolchildren, representing five teams from Russia and five from Mongolia.
Russian Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Alexander Kozlov emphasized the importance of the Olympics for the development of the industry. “This project not only popularizes profession of geologist, but also lays the foundation for future cooperation between our countries in the mineral resources sector,” he noted.
Participants will have to go through eight practical stages that simulate the real work of geologists:
- Compliance with safety precautions and first aid.
- Organizing a field camp: setting up a tent and making a fire.
- Conducting a geological route with mapping and collecting samples.
- Hydrological studies and calculations.
- Definition minerals, rocks and fossils.
The competition will last three days, and the best team will receive tickets to the geological shift of the All-Russian center “Smena”. The event supports the international children’s and youth geological movement, uniting more than 20 thousand schoolchildren from six countries.
The Olympics in Ulaanbaatar is an important step in developing young talents and strengthening scientific ties between Russia and Mongolia. Participation in such projects opens up new professional horizons for schoolchildren.
