American researchers have created an autonomous floating platform capable of generating energy from the movement of waves. The new product is designed to provide uninterrupted power supply to scientific instruments in high latitudes.
Engineers and scientists from several organizations presented a specialized buoy that solves the problem of energy supply in extreme conditions. The device generates electricity by pumping on waves, which makes it independent of sunlight and resistant to low temperatures.
The design uses the principle of converting mechanical energy. There are two pendulums installed inside the body, which begin to swing when the buoy moves on the water. This rotational energy is transmitted through the gearbox to the electric generator. The generated current is stored in the built-in battery.
To achieve maximum efficiency, the developers conducted computer modeling to select the optimal body shape. The best results were shown by the elongated spherical design. To enhance vibrations, a special keel plate is attached to the bottom of the buoy on a cable.
Test tests of the prototype have already been carried out. In moderate wave conditions, the system demonstrated the ability to recharge batteries. This allows you to significantly increase the battery life of meteorological and oceanographic devices. sensors compared to using conventional batteries.
The development opens up new opportunities for long-term scientific observations in the Arctic and Antarctic. The next task for the creators will be to test the device in severe storm conditions and further improve its effectiveness.
