The islands and archipelagos of the Russian Arctic in the coming years may turn into new centers for the extraction of solid minerals. Scientists from VNIIOkeangeologiya came to this conclusion after analyzing the resource potential of these territories.

Researchers note that the Arctic islands have significant reserves solid minerals and have an important logistical advantage – access to the Northern Sea Route. This allows us to consider them as the basis for the formation of at least three new mineral resource centers.

According to scientists, geological exploration of the islands has been carried out since the 1950s, but their potential has not been fully explored. Experts emphasize that further research may lead to the discovery new deposits and inventory clarification.

Among the most promising areas are the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, Severnaya Zemlya and the New Siberian Islands. Lead-zinc ores, manganese and fluorite have already been explored on Novaya Zemlya. Projects to create mining and processing infrastructure are also being implemented here. Severnaya Zemlya is considered promising for gold and copper-iron ores. The New Siberian Islands are known for alluvial tin, large coal resources and unique reserves of fossil mammoth bone.

According to the authors of the study, these territories can become reference points for the development of the Arctic mineral resource base and provide the country with scarce types of raw materials. At the same time, experts emphasize that development is possible only if there is a comprehensive infrastructure and a clear economic justification.

Special attention is paid to environmental risks. Arctic Islands They are distinguished by extremely vulnerable ecosystems, and many of them are part of nature reserves and national parks. Any exploration and production projects here must comply with strict environmental restrictions.

Scientists believe that the development of mineral resource centers in the Arctic is possible only with a balance between the strategic need to develop resources and preserve the unique nature of the region. Only this approach will make it possible to use the potential of the Arctic islands without damaging ecosystems.
