Mining and Metallurgical Company Nornickel together with Yandex is implementing a digital ecosystem that will enable the use of artificial intelligence in more than 30 production and management processes. The key feature is that data remains within the corporate loop and does not reach the provider, while cloud facilities serve only as a computing “armor”.
The project is based on a hybrid architecture: Nornickel’s own IT infrastructure is connected to the Yandex Cloud via a dedicated secure channel. At the same time, information is not stored on the Yandex side and does not go to the open Internet. This allows the use of large language models within the company without risking the leakage of trade secrets.
In parallel, Nornickel is developing corporate solutions based on its own MetalGPT model. It is used to automate project, inventory and financial management. Several dozen applications are already being tested and are showing impressive results: the turnaround time for individual tasks has been reduced from 30 days to a few hours.
“We take a pragmatic approach to the introduction of artificial intelligence. Our focus today is on those scenarios where the technology yields measurable economic results,” explained Vitaly Busko, Nornickel’s Vice President for Innovation.
The developed format for using language models in the cloud has proven to be easily scalable. It has already attracted interest from companies in other industries that also want to obtain powerful computing resources without risking data privacy.
Thus, Nornickel and Yandex are not just automating individual processes, but creating a universal secure environment for the introduction of AI in industry. This makes it possible to combine economic efficiency with a high level of digital security.
