Shop Manager’s Day at a large mining and processing plant starts at 5:30 am. By 8:00 the manager is already in a quarry 250 meters deep, where 230 people work under his control, removing 1.2 million tons of rock per month. In this article, we will look at vacancies from hh.ru and analyze how much a mining engineer earns in 2026 and what career tracks are available to him.
Who is a mining engineer and what does he do by profession?
The profession of a mining engineer combines everything related to the extraction of minerals from the subsoil: open-pit and underground mining, beneficiation, and surveying.

Specialists are in demand at the coal mines of Kuzbass, gold mining enterprises in Yakutia, iron ore plants of the KMA, and also in design institutes, supervisory authorities (Rostechnadzor), during the construction of subways and tunnels.

Where to become a mining engineer
In Russia, about 30 universities provide specialized education for a mining engineer. The backbone of the industry is formed by units whose graduates are recruited by employers from the third year:
- St. Petersburg Mining University;
- NUST MISIS, Mining Institute;
- Ural State Mining University;
- Irkutsk National Research Technical University (IRNTU).
You can study full-time or part-time. Distance programs are available at SSUGiT, KuzSTU and Petrozavodsk State University. Industrial internships are paid, and often, based on their results, the company offers the graduate to stay, so a non-working student of a mining specialty by the fourth year is rare.
If you already have a higher education, but not in mining, it is not necessary to go to university to become a mining engineer. Professional retraining courses are suitable for geologists, builders and metallurgists.

Growth opportunities and prospects for the profession “Mining Engineer”
The mining engineer profession is one of the few in Russia where the conditions are dictated by the applicant, and not by the employer. According to the MINEX-2025 forum, by 2035 the industry will be required another 280 thousand employees, and universities will graduate only 63 thousand specialists over the same period – a deficit of about 217 thousand people.
In order not to operate with abstract numbers, let’s look at a specific example of a career track, based on vacancies from our sample.
Starting positions for a university graduate with a specialty in Mining:
- design engineer of the 1st category at JSC VNIPIpromtekhnologii (experience 1–3 years) – 70,700–98,000 ₽;
- mining engineer (underground conditions) at Transinzhstroy JSC, Moscow – from 110,000 ₽;
- leading drilling and blasting engineer at KRU-Vzryvprom without experience – 92,000 ₽.
After 3–6 years in production and with specialized tolerances, positions at a different level open:
- chief surveyor through Your Personnel Service LLC, Moscow – from 220,000 ₽;
- PTO engineer for drilling and blasting at NITRO SIBERIA LLC – 220,000 ₽;
- engineer for setting up underground equipment at Norilsk Nickel – 220,000–350,000 rubles per month.
On watch in the Far North the salary of a mining engineer is even higher:
- mining foreman at the Sovrudnik gold mining enterprise (Yenisei Ridge) – 239,000 ₽;
- process engineer at ELGA in Yakutia – 530,000 ₽ per shift;
- adjustment engineer at Norilsk Nickel in Norilsk – 731,000 ₽ per shift.
We fix salary growth over 5–7 years depending on mobility and chosen specialization.
Real example: Svyatoslav Petin at the Zapolyarny mine (Norilsk Nickel) over four years grew up from a mining foreman to the head of the underground mining section. Both positions require a graduate degree in mining engineering.

In addition to the classic production vertical, mining engineers with education have parallel tracks. The most widespread are design institutes (VNIPIpromtekhnologii, SibNIIGiMD, SibKemProekt). The salary there is lower than in production – about 106 thousand rubles according to our sample – but there is a stable five-day schedule without shifts.
With knowledge of English, the market for foreign projects opens in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, African and Latin American countries, and with international qualifications (for example, JORC certification) – access to the top markets of the USA, Canada and Australia, where an experienced mining engineer can earn about $80,000–200,000 per year.

Is it worth going to mining engineering?
If the profession of a mining engineer had only advantages, the shortage of specialists would have gone away long ago. Before submitting documents to Gorny, you need to consider three factors:
- Harmful working conditions. A mine is dust, noise, vibration, and elevated temperatures at deep levels. For working in difficult conditions, early retirement is granted.
- High responsibility. An error in calculating a drilling and blasting passport or a violation of ventilation rules in a mine can cost a life. This is not a job where you can close your laptop at 18:00 and go home.
- Remoteness and shift. An experienced mining engineer spends one and a half to two months a year on site, several time zones away from his family.
The profession of a mining engineer is definitely suitable for those who are ready for physical exertion, long trips and work with direct risks to life. But it provides something that can now be obtained in few places: a clear career lift, lack of competition at the entrance and a stable demand for experienced specialists.
Chief engineer of the Zapolyarny mine Vyacheslav Potnikov, who has worked in the profession for 30 years, notes, that mining requires a special character: those who came by chance do not stay underground for long.
