The Siberian Ring Source of Photons (SKIF) has officially opened in the science town of Koltsovo near Novosibirsk. The facility can resolve structures down to the atomic level and monitor chemical reactions in real time. President Vladimir Putin personally launched the complex, which includes 34 buildings and structures, and signed a commemorative plaque marking its opening.
SKIF is more than a powerful scientific instrument. It is Russia’s first fourth-generation synchrotron radiation source operating at an energy of 3 gigaelectronvolts (GeV). In simple terms, the facility accelerates electrons to speeds close to that of light and forces them to emit an extremely intense beam of X-rays. Scientists direct the beam at samples to study their structures at the micro- and nanoscale, down to the arrangement of individual atoms within molecules.
SKIF’s main advantage over conventional laboratory equipment is its ability to observe not just a static image, but an evolving process. Researchers can track how a crack develops in metal, how molecules in a new drug interact with a target, or what happens inside an oil-bearing formation under pressure—all in real time.
The range of applications is extensive. The facility will support drug development and testing, as well as the creation of new materials and industrial catalysts. Geologists will be able to study deposits of rare and precious metals, while oil companies can use the technology to improve recovery from hard-to-recover reserves. Archaeologists will be able to examine ancient artifacts without damaging them, while environmental scientists can use the facility to investigate new approaches to water and air purification.
The launch of SKIF marks the first step toward building a broader network of synchrotron radiation facilities across Russia. Novosibirsk is now set to become a major scientific destination for researchers from across the country seeking access to advanced X-ray analytical capabilities.
The accelerator in Koltsovo is effectively a national-scale microscope capable of revealing the structure of matter at the atomic level. From advanced materials and ancient manuscripts to drug molecules and oil reservoirs, SKIF opens a window into the invisible world—and gives scientists a powerful new way to explore it.
